Stoke City have broken their club transfer record to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter Milan for £12million.

Shaqiri - a Switzerland international who only joined Inter in January this year from Bayern Munich - has signed a five-year deal at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke actually agreed the £12m fee with Inter over a month ago, but were forced to wait for a verdict from the player as to whether he wanted to move to the West Midlands.

Potters manager Mark Hughes even admitted several weeks later that they were moving on to other targets, having grown tired of waiting for the attacker to make his decision.

But Shaqiri was spotted watching Stoke's opening Premier League defeat at home to Liverpool from the Britannia Stadium's directors' box on Sunday, and he has since completed a medical and agreed his personal terms.

Shaqiri began his career with Basel before joining Bayern in 2012, where he two Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League.

He scored 11 league goals in 26 starts for Bayern but after a good World Cup in Brazil in 2014, struggled to establish himself in the first team at the Allianz Arena.

The 23-year-old has scored 17 goals in 46 international appearances for Switzerland.

Stoke City have agreed a £12m deal to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter Milan, according to Sky Italia sources.

Mark Hughes' side attempted to sign the attacking midfielder from Bayern Munich in January but the Switzerland international opted to join Inter on a four-and-a-half year deal understood to be worth £16m.

However, he made just eight league starts during the second half of the season, scoring just once in Serie A, and the Italian club are now prepared to move him on.

Shaqiri began his career with Basel before joining Bayern in 2012, where he two Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League.

Stoke City & Inter reach agreement for Shaqiri: player needs to agree to destination

After just a few months in Italy, Xherdan Shaqiri could be heading to the Premier League.
In fact today Inter and Stoke City reached an agreement for the sale of the Swiss winger on the basis of ?17 million.
It will now be up to Shaqiri to decide if he'll accept the destination, Stoke City has made the first contacts to understand his intentions.
Shaqiri could be on his way to England.

The 23-year-old, who typically operates as an attacking midfielder, joined Inter from Bayern Munich in January.
haqiri scored three goals in 20 games for Inter and has 17 in 46 games for Switzerland.
He would become the Potters' third summer signing after striker Joselu joined from Hannover and goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard from FC Midtjylland.
A deal for Shaqiri would top the £10m Stoke paid Tottenham for striker Peter Crouch in 2011.

Earlier today we reported that Inter and Stoke City had reached an agreement on the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri subject to the player's approval.
But at the moment the Swiss player isn't convinced by the destination, the former Bayern winger appears to be disappointed by Inter's decision to sell him after just a half a season.
Stoke will continue to try to convince Shaqiri to accept a transfer to the Premier League.
