Glen Johnson is having a medical ahead of a move to Stoke City, Sky sources understand.

Johnson, 30, was released by Liverpool at the end of last season despite claiming more of a regular role in Brendan Rodgers' side over the last two months.

The England full-back made 160 Premier League appearances for the Reds after joining them from Portsmouth in the summer of 2009.

Since his departure from Anfield in June, Liverpool have snapped up another England international – Nathaniel Clyne – to play at right-back.

The 30-year-old, who has 54 caps, was also linked with moves to West Ham and Turkish side Besiktas.

Former Liverpool and England right-back Glen Johnson is currently undergoing a medical at Stoke, according to Sky sources.

Should he complete the move, Johnson's first league game for his new club would likely be against his former employers Liverpool at the Britannia Stadium - a game you can see live on Sky Sports on Sunday 9 August.

HUGHES WELCOMES JOHNSON

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has all-but confirmed the arrival of Glen Johnson at the Britannia Stadium and believes the former England and Liverpool full-back will be a valuable addition to his squad.

"Glen is a very experienced player and we feel the qualities he has will help us," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"We're a team that is trying to progress and do that by getting good players into the squad.

"Glen has played at a high level for a very long time and we can benefit from that."
