The Giallorossi need a new shot-stopper, as Morgan De Sanctis is set to retire next summer. Their main targets had been PSG and Italy man Salvatore Sirigu or out of contract Argentina international Romero.
According to newspaper Il Tempo, Roma have agreed personal terms with Szczesny and are working out details of the transfer with Arsenal.
He has 23 senior caps for Poland, but is being pushed down the pecking order by the arrival of Petr Cech.
Meanwhile, Roma letting go of Romero means Manchester United now have the all-clear to sign the former Sampdoria and Monaco goalkeeper.
OUR VIEW:
The arrival of Petr Cech this summer meant that one of David Ospina or Wojciech Szczesny would be deemed surplus to requirements at the Emirates and it now appears to be the Polish international who will be on his way.
What Arsenal fans will be wondering is whether the move is a loan or a permanent exit from the club. The 25-year-old divides opinion, especially after some high-profile smoking indiscretions, but many will hope that he stays in the long term.
