Asier Illarramendi is happy to have re-signed for boyhood club Real Sociedad after a disappointing stint with Real Madrid.

Sociedad confirmed the deal on Wednesday, with Spanish media reporting the Basque side had agreed to pay around £12.5m (17m euros) for Illarramendi, having sold him to Real for almost 40m euros two years ago.

Illarramendi arrived at the airport in San Sebastian on Wednesday morning and told reporters he was "pleased" to be returning to the Anoeta and it had been his first choice once he realised he had to leave Madrid.

A holding midfielder, Illarramendi has had little playing time at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric ahead of him in the central midfielder pecking order.

The 25-year-old was in the Spain squad that won the U21 Euro championships in Israel in 2013 and was named in UEFA's team of the tournament, but has yet to make an appearance for the European champions' senior team.

His return to Sociedad could revive his career and may help coach David Moyes towards his goal of qualifying for Europe this season.

The club began their La Liga campaign at the weekend with a 0-0 draw at Deportivo La Coruna.

Asier Illarramendi is a step closer to re-joining Real Sociedad, who have set the wheels in motion to complete a deal for a player who would be their star summer signing.
The Basque club wants their former midfielder back and have tabled a ?15m bid, as well as offering him the same money he is on at Real Madrid.
It is an offer that both club and player, who would get to keep his current salary, will find hard to turn down.
Illarra is excited at the prospect of returning to his boyhood club following a two-year stint at Real Madrid.
He has enjoyed his time at the Bernabéu, but is disappointed at not convincing Carlo Ancelotti or Rafa Benítez of his worth.

Milan, no Illarramendi: the player returns to Real Sociedad

Asier Illarramendi will not be joining Milan after the midfielder opted to return to his former club Real Sociedad.
The Rossoneri had been linked with a possible move for the player yesterday but Spanish sports daily Marca has reported that Illarramendi prefers to return to the club that nurtured him as a youngster.
Milan still search for a midfielder for coach  Mihajlovic.

ILLARRAMENDI CLOSES IN ON SOCIEDAD MOVE

Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi has arrived in San Sebastian ahead of his transfer to Real Sociedad, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

The Spaniard, who was left out of Real Madrid’s match-day squad for their 0-0 draw at Sporting Gijon at the weekend, has been linked with several Premier League sides in recent days but he looks set to return to his former club Real Sociedad instead.

The 25-year-old landed at San Sebastian Airport early on Wednesday morning, and he is scheduled to undergo a medical and sign a contract with Real Sociedad later today (Wednesday).

Neither Real Madrid nor Real Sociedad have officially announced the deal, but EFE reports that the agreement is finalised, with the possibility of the player being presented later today.

It was reported on Tuesday that Illarramendi will initially join Real Sociedad on a season-long loan deal, while the Basque club will be obliged to sign him permanently for a fee of around ?17m in June.
