Ligament damage set to keep Reds defender on the sidelines for extended period
Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is facing an extended spell on the sidelines with suspected ankle ligament damage. The Croatian centre-back was stretchered off late on in extra time of Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup tie with Carlisle United at Anfield. Lovren was clearly in agony after landing awkwardly and was given oxygen as he exited the field.
The 26-year-old will have a scan to determine the full extent of the damage to his right ankle but Liverpool medical staff fear he will ruled out of action for at least two months. It’s the latest setback to hamper Lovren’s Reds career. He has struggled to establish himself at Anfield following his £20million move from Southampton last year.
Brendan Rodgers put his faith in him at the start of this season but he was dropped for the visit of Norwich last weekend with Mamadou Sakho picked ahead of him.
Lovren joins captain Jordan Henderson and striker Christian Benteke on the Reds’ injury list.
