Eddie Howe signs Bournemouth contract extension

Last Updated: 15/10/15 5:40pm

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has signed an extension to his contract.

The 37-year-old steered the Cherries into the Premier League last season and it is believed that his new deal will keep him at the club until 2020.

He was already under contract to Bournemouth for the next two and a half years but has agreed a lengthier stay, after a clause in his previous contract was activated by their recent promotion.

The news is certain to be welcomed by Cherries fans, the club having achieved unprecedented success under Howe, who is held in such regard that he has been talked of as a potential England manager of the future.

He took charge of Bournemouth when they were in League Two at the start of 2009 and has overseen three promotions since, leaving the club in January 2011 for a 21-month stint at Burnley.

Bournemouth owner Maxim Denim said: "I am delighted that Eddie has committed his future to the club.

"Eddie and I have a very close relationship, we speak every day, and we trust each other implicitly when making decisions that affect the football club.

"The mutual respect we have for each other has helped create a unique bond at the top of the club and has acted as the foundation for all our recent successes.

"Together we have managed to achieve a great deal in a short space of time, and I have complete faith in Eddie and his management team to establish AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League over the coming seasons."

Chief executive Neill Blake said: "Eddie's contract had a clause in it which meant that we would re-negotiate after promotion to the Premier League.

"Rather than negotiate immediately in May, Eddie, Maxim and I all felt that it was more appropriate to concentrate on preparations for the club's first season in the top flight.

"Once we found the opportunity to address Eddie's deal, the negotiations proved quick and easy and we are absolutely delighted with the outcome."

Despite their relatively modest budget and a run of incredibly bad luck with injuries, Bournemouth have made a reasonable start to Premier League life, taking eight points from their first eight games.
