Sunderland close in on first January signing



Sam Allardyce is closing in on his first January signing after French club Lorient accepted Sunderland's bid for defender Lamine Kone.

Allardyce revealed on Monday that he had two players lined up as he attempts to strengthen the squad he inherited from predecessor Dick Advocaat as quickly as possible when the winter transfer window opens.

And it appears 26-year-old Kone could be the first of them after it emerged that the two clubs had agreed a fee.

Lorient vice-president Alex Hayes told www.ouest-france.fr: "We have received an offer that we have accepted.

"It is now up to Lamine to find an agreement with Sunderland and to pass the medical before the transfer can be made official."

It is understood that Kone, who has been tracked by Allardyce since his time at West Ham, flew to England on Tuesday to open talks with the Black Cats, who are hopeful of striking a deal within the next few days.

SUNDERLAND BACK IN FOR KONE

Sky Sources: Sunderland have revived their interest in Lamine Kone and talks are continuing.

The Ivorian defender spend time on Wearside last week before returning to France after a fee of £5m was agreed with Lorient.

But we understand Sam Allardyce remains interested in bringing the defender to the Stadium of Light, despite the signing of Jan Kirchhoff from Bayern Munich last week.

Sunderland remain in talks with Lamine Kone. Likely to be a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer now.

KONE TO SUNDERLAND?

Sam Allardyce is awaiting an answer from Lorient's Lamine Kone after Sunderland's on-off pursuit of the defender took a fresh twist.

The Sunderland boss has twice ended his interest in the 26-year Ivorian this month, the club initially cooling on a £5m deal before negotiations broke down after a loan move had been proposed.

However, the transfer has been resurrected after Lorient vice-president Alex Hayes confirmed the club had received a bid they "couldn't refuse".

Hayes told Ouest France: "Sunderland have come back with a firm offer that we couldn't refuse. The ball is therefore in Lamine Kone's camp. He has to make his decision in the coming hours."
