Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp makes shock approach for England defenderLIVERPOOL have targeted Steven Caulker as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his defensive options.
An approach has been made to Queens Park Rangers for Caulker, 24, who has spent the first half of the season on loan at Southampton.
Caulker joined Ronald Koeman’s side for the whole of the season, but a lack of playing time means Liverpool are hoping that arrangement can be cancelled and he can move to Anfield for the remainder of the campaign.England defender Caulker’s last appearance ironically came in Liverpool’s 6-1 Capital One Cup victory over Southampton back in November.
The centre-back, 24, would provide cover for Klopp who is hoping to have Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho available for tomorrow’s Premier League showdown with leaders Arsenal.Dejan Lovren is injured, although could yet feature against Manchester United on Sunday, while Martin Skrtel faces a longer rehabilitation from a hamstring problem.
Klopp had looked at Neven Subotic at former club Borussia Dortmund when the injury crisis first erupted, but the Bundesliga side have blocked his departure.
Caulker could play in the Europa League, if Liverpool chose to register him, and the FA Cup although not the replay with Exeter City because he would not have been registered for the original tie.
Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was keen on Caulker, who was previously at Swansea.
