Klopp fears the worst on midfielder - and knee damage could threaten his Euro 2016 campaign with England
Jurgen Klopp said an injury to Jordan Henderson was the disappointment of Liverpool’s 1-1 away draw with Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League quarter final. The Reds captain had to be replaced at half-time by Joe Allen with his team leading 1-0 thanks to Divock Origi’s 36th minute opener. He later left the Westfalenstadion on crutches but with Liverpool medical staff unclear about the scale of the ligament damage he has suffered. Klopp said Henderson was facing a scan but seemed to fear the worst in his post match interviews.
“Dortmund is a pretty good side, everyone could see, but we had our moments. We could have won the game, that’s how it is. We concede this goal after a set-piece, that’s not too necessary but overall the disappointment is Hendo.
“Hendo’s injury is a knee injury so it doesn’t look too good. That’s really bad news. (He’ll have a scan) for sure tomorrow. "Jordan is really frustrating because each team in the world needs a little bit of luck, but it looks like we don't have it.
“We need to wait for the scan and we hope for the best, but it doesn't look good.
“I don't want to speculate, what can I say until we have the scan, but it is not a small thing, I think, but we have to wait.” Klopp’s decision to start Origi paid off handsomely with the young Belgian taking his goal well goal and the Reds boss said it was the perfect night to play the striker.
“Maybe you haven’t always seen it but we have a plan sometimes. Divock was made for this game with the space he can make, with his speed on the ball, he can hold and keep with his body, it was really good.
“In the end it was 1-1, it’s one of the results you can get when you play in Dortmund. I’m pretty sure that a lot of people thought we would lose two, three, maybe four nil. Of course they had their chances and they played really good and calm in the game but we had them at some moments.
“Around our goal, we were brilliant and you have to work for these moments. Against an opponent like Dortmund you have to move and defend with all you have until you get your chance.
“We are not as far on our way as they are and we cannot play at this moment like them but we can defend them in most moments and we can score goals so obviously we can win.”
A marking mismatch at the corner allowed Mats Hummels to equalise in the 48th minute when he out-jumped Adam Lallana on a cross from the right.
Klopp admitted the situation was difficult for his team, possibly alluding to their lack of height in some positions.
He said: “That’s a problem for us when we organise our set pieces at the end. We could have had Divock Origi but you never know. That’s the problem with changes in the game, it’s hectic, it is how it is, we could have blocked the cross. We could do a lot of things but at the end it’s a goal and it’s not the most important thing tonight.”
Speaking about the fantastic reception he received form the stadium, the Reds boss was typically understated.
“That’s nice. A lot of people spoke about how it would be. When I came in it was respectful applause, that’s nice and how it should be, everything is okay.”
