Everton confirm £24m signing of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United

Everton have announced the £24m signing of Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

The France international has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal until the end of June 2021, with the Toffees paying United an initial fee of £20m.

Schneiderlin says he is relishing the prospect of being reunited with Ronald Koeman, under whom he worked at Southampton prior to his departure to Old Trafford 18 months ago.

The 27-year-old said: “Everton is a big club in the history of English football. I’ve always loved the atmosphere in the stadium. I’ve always liked playing here. I can’t wait to play and to represent this great club.

“There is a manager in place here that I know, and I know he can get the best out of me. I know his style and how he likes to play football. He was very good with me from the start and I enjoyed playing under him.

“He was very good for me and, obviously. At Southampton he gave me some great advice to keep improving every day and it was a pleasure to work with him."

Sky sources reported earlier this month that Schneiderlin was of strong interest to Everton and West Brom, who had a £19m bid rejected.

Schneiderlin preferred a move to Everton to link up again with Koeman and the clubs agreed a fee earlier this week.

Manager Koeman believes the quality and hunger of Schneiderlin are exactly what he and Everton need, after a slump in form has seen them win only four Premier League games since September.

He said: “I’m very pleased because I know the qualities of the player, I know him as a person and he’s really desperate to come to Everton - and that’s what we need.

“We want good players but we also want players who really want to show their qualities in front of the fans.

“He’s a strong character, can play in different positions in the midfield, and is also a fast, clever player, and a personality."

Morgan Schneiderlin’s miserable 18-month spell at Manchester United is nearing an end with Everton moving closer to signing the France midfielder in a permanent deal.

Everton are in talks about bringing Schneiderlin to Goodison Park with United hopeful of agreeing a package that will see them recoup the £24 million they paid Southampton for the 27-year-old in July last year.

Schneiderlin has not started a Premier League game for United this season after being frozen out under manager Jose Mourinho and has come to accept his interests will be best served by a move.
West Bromwich Albion were also interested in Schneiderlin but Everton are in pole position to sign the Frenchman, who is keen to reunite with Ronald Koeman, who managed him at Southampton.

Koeman regards Schneiderlin as a quality long-term replacement for Gareth Barry, the 35-year-old former England midfielder, and Everton are willing to meet the player’s £120,000 a week wages in addition to funding a significant transfer fee. It is unlikely United will receive a flat fee of £24 million but with add ons the total package could be around that total.

United beat off competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal to sign Schneiderlin under Louis van Gaal but the midfielder struggled to hold down a regular first team place and has found himself on the periphery since Mourinho succeeded the Dutchman in May.

Schneiderlin has played just 11 minutes in the Premier League this term and has even fallen behind Bastian Schweinsteiger in the pecking order, despite the German World Cup winner being written off as an asset in the club’s annual accounts in the expectation that he would not play until he was sold.

Yet Schweinsteiger has recently been brought back into the fold by Mourinho, even if the expectation is that the midfielder will still leave in the transfer window next month or, failing that, next summer amid strong interest from Major League Soccer clubs.

Schneiderlin has Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini in addition to Schweinsteiger ahead of him for the midfield positions and hopes to revive his flagging career on Merseyside.

Everton are also interested in signing United winger Memphis Depay on loan until the end of the season as a short-term replacement for Yannick Bolasie, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a serious knee ligament injury, but securing Schneiderlin has been the priority.

Mourinho admitted yesterday that he would not stand in the way of Schneiderlin or Depay if they asked to leave. “I am always open to listen to offers for every player,” the United manager said. “More than listen to offers, I am always ready to listen to the players themselves. So any player who knocks on my door and is not happy and wants to move, when the offers are correct, I will never stop a player from leaving even if it is to a rival.”

West Brom table record £18 million bid for Morgan Schneiderlin

Tony Pulis has tabled a club-record £18 million bid for Manchester United outcast Morgan Schneiderlin.

Pulis is making an ambitious move for Schneiderlin and wants to rival Everton in the January battle to sign the France international.

Everton are already in talks to bring the midfielder to Goodison Park, with Ronald Koeman keen to end Schneiderlin’s miserable 18 months under Louis van Gaal and now Jose Mourinho, but West Brom have formalised their interest with an official offer.
Pulis has been assured of significant funds for the right players and believes Schneiderlin will play a major role in helping Albion progress into a Premier League club which consistently finishes in the top 10.

West Brom recognise that Everton could be a more attractive proposition, with Schneiderlin also playing under Koeman at former club Southampton, but are determined to make a serious play for the 27 year-old.

Schneiderlin currently earns around £120,000 a week at Old Trafford and though he would have to take a pay cut to join either Everton or West Brom, he is desperate to revive his career after falling off the radar.

The deal, if successfully completed by West Brom, would comfortably beat their previous record of £13 million for Nacer Chadli from Tottenham Hotspur in August.

“We have to make sure that we hang in there until the window opens and fingers crossed we can add one or two to the squad,” said Pulis. "That's what we need to do, add one or two to the squad and keep things ticking over and going in the right direction."
