West Bromwich Albion have resumed talks with Southampton over a £12 million deal for Jay Rodriguez.

Tony Pulis, the West Brom head coach, is stepping up his bid to sign the England international and battling to tie up a deal before the end of the month.

Rodriguez is free to leave Southampton this summer and Albion are in dialogue with Saints, with an initial fee of around £12 million understood to be the asking price.

Newcastle are also interested in the 27-year-old forward but it is believed Rodriguez is attracted to the prospect of signing for West Brom, who have attempted to sign him over the last two transfer windows.

Southampton’s dismissal of Claude Puel earlier this month, and their subsequent search for a replacement, may delay negotiations but Pulis is hopeful of making the former Burnley striker one of his first signings of the summer.

Pulis held talks with club owner Guochuan Lai in China at the end of last season and was assured of a healthy budget, with sources suggesting around £40 million could be available to spend on players.

Albion are also targeting a centre-half and a defensive midfielder, after the departure of Darren Fletcher to Stoke. Pulis remains interested in former Chelsea captain John Terry but faces competition from Swansea, Bournemouth and Midlands rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham.

Towards the end of last season, Pulis confirmed squad strengthening was a priority. “There’s a better feel about the place now and after two-and-a-half years it’s continuously progressed. To keep doing that, we need better players," he said.

“We have to be clever with our money and get good characters in. I’d love to sign John Terry but then I’d love to sign Sergio Agüero as well.

“Yes, we had a bad run at the end [of last season] but when you digest it, it’s been a fantastic season.

“We have to recognise where we’ve been weak and where we’ve fallen down, then try and improve for next year.”

West Brom are set to sign Jay Rodriguez in a £15m deal from Southampton, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ understands an initial fee of £12m has been agreed that will include £3m of potential add-ons, and the move could be announced as early as Monday.

Sky sources reported earlier this month that the Baggies had made an approach, as Tony Pulis firmed up long-term interest in the 27-year-old.

Rodriguez' future at St Mary's had been in question for some time since he recovered from long-term injury in 2015, with the player struggling to break into the first-team under both Ronald Koeman and his successor Claude Puel.

Southampton have four centre-forward options in Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Sam Gallagher and Sky Sports News HQ understands Rodriguez would have continued to struggle for game time under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

Rodriguez signed for Southampton from Burnley on their promotion to the Premier League in 2012, and he thrived under Mauricio Pochettino, who has previously been interested in taking him to Tottenham.

But instead, he will sign for West Brom to become their first addition of the 2017 summer transfer window.

Jay Rodriguez: West Brom sign striker from Southampton in £12m deal

West Bromwich Albion have signed England striker Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for a fee of about £12m.

The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries in his five years at Saints, scoring 32 goals in 126 appearances.

His most prolific season was 2013-14, when he scored 15 Premier League goals and made his only England appearance.

"After one or two 'near misses' I'm absolutely buzzing to be here," Rodriguez - a long-term target for boss Tony Pulis - told the club website.

"The most important thing for any player is to be wanted - and Tony Pulis and Albion have made it clear just how much they have wanted me to join. That's fantastic for any footballer to hear.

"I'm genuinely delighted to be joining a club of Albion's stature. The team is full of top players and it's pretty clear that they are also a great set of lads."

Rodriguez missed the entire 2014-15 season after a serious knee injury and then had ankle surgery in November 2015, making only 16 appearances that season, before netting six goals in 34 appearances last season.

The Burnley-born forward, who left his home town club for Southampton in a reported £7m move in 2012, made his international debut against Chile in November 2013 and was in contention for England's World Cup squad before his knee injury in April 2014.
