Mauricio Pellegrino has emerged as Southampton’s first-
choice candidate to replace Claude Puel following an impressive interview and is now poised to follow his friend, Mauricio Pochettino, to St Mary’s as the second Argentinian manager in the Premier League. Southampton have been interviewing candidates since the sacking last week of Claude Puel and, having identified Pellegrino early in their process, should have the 45-year-old in place by the time the first players return for pre-season training next Thursday. Southampton’s infrastructure and success in establishing themselves in the top half of the Premier League is understood to have attracted Pellegrino, who speaks fluent English and left his job at Alaves last month, although the deal is not yet completed. The arrival of Pellegrino would prompt immediate comparison with what proved to be the inspired choice of Pochettino in 2013 after he had also played in both Argentina and Spain before managing in La Liga.
Pellegrino does also have experience of English football after playing under Rafael Benitez at Liverpool and then also working as his assistant on Merseyside for two years. He also worked with Benitez at Inter Milan before taking managerial jobs at Valencia, who he had helped reached the Champions League, and then in Argentina with Estudiantes and Independiente. His work last season at Alaves has drawn particular attention among managerial talent spotters, with the club finishing ninth in La Liga and also reaching the final of the Copa del Rey against Barcelona.
As well as Pellegrino, Southampton did again consider Frank De Boer, as they did last summer before eventually appointing Puel, as well as former Bundesliga coaches Thomas Tuchel and Roger Schmidt.
Southampton felt they needed a strong character after a sense that Puel lost the support of certain key players last season but also a manager who would be committed to creating a pathway for players from the academy to the first-team.
There is also a sense that Pellegrino should fit comfortably within Southampton’s structure, where executive director Les Reed and recruitment chief Ross Wilson oversee most of the buying and selling of players, as well as the club’s on-field culture, in consultation with the manager.
