West Brom have two Ben Gibson bids rejected by Middlesbrough

West Brom have had two bids turned down for Middlesbrough captain Ben Gibson, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News understands the first bid was believed to total £15m while the follow up offer was in the region of £20m.

But both bids fell way below Boro's valuation of the defender, who is a member of chairman Steve Gibson's family.

The 24-year-old centre-back is currently recovering in hospital after breaking his nose in a friendly against Rochdale at the weekend.

Gibson signed a new five-year contract last year, where he impressed for the Teesside club despite their struggles and eventual relegation from the Premier League, and was called into the England squad for the first time.

After the season ended in May, the Boro-born academy graduate told Sky Sorts that he had not decided whether or not he wanted to leave Middlesbrough but admitted he wanted to play in the Premier League.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this week that the Baggies were interested as they moved on to new defensive targets, following a failed move for Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs.

Manchester City are stepping up their interest in Middlesbrough skipper Ben Gibson, according to The Daily Mail.

Pep Guardiola is reportedly a big admirier of the centre-back, who has been tracked by West Brom this summer.

However, Garry Monk has continuously said Gibson is not for sale: “From day one, it was very clear we don't have to sell any player. I said all along it would have to be an extraordinary offer for any player to leave and we don't want our important players to leave.”

West Brom are expected to return with a third and improved bid for Middlesbrough captain Ben Gibson, according to Sky sources.

The Baggies have so far failed with two bids for the centre-back, with the second offer totalling up to £20m.

Assistant manager Gary Megson told Sky Sports News on Tuesday that the club could complete deals for five transfer targets ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth.

Gibson, who was called into the England squad for the first time last season, was an ever-present for Middlesbrough last season in what was their first campaign in the top-flight since 2009.

The 24-year-old impressed in his debut season in the Premier League keeping 11 clean sheets last season but their profligacy in front of goal saw them return to the Sky Bet Championship.

Gibson, whose uncle Steve Gibson is the Middlesbrough owner, started the Teesside club's first fixture of the new season, a 1-0 defeat against Wolves, and Boro's boss Garry Monk admitted to Sky Sports News last week that it would take an "extraordinary offer" for their leader to be sold.

There was no comment from West Brom when contacted by Sky Sports News.

Ben Gibson is at the centre of a beat-the-deadline £20m transfer scramble.

Leicester are interested in the Middlesbrough centre half despite already signing Harry Maguire as they look to rebuild their defence and bolster their squad.

Manchester City are also watching developments closely and could turn to Gibson if their move for West Brom’s Jonny Evans fails to materialise.

City have had an £18m bid turned down by West Brom and they are standing firm but Pep Guardiola’s men are desperate to bring in a centre half before the window shuts.

West Brom have been interested in Gibson in the past but are now battling to keep Evans who is keen on a move to the Etihad.

Gibson impressed in the Premier League last season despite Boro’s relegation and got a call-up to the England squad.

Boro captain Gibson will be concerned as to whether Gareth Southgate will keep picking him from the Championship.

Middlesbrough are reluctant to sell but might find it difficult to turn down £20m as there has been plenty of interest as Spurs and Chelsea have previously scouted him.
