Newcastle are close to completing the signing of Stoke striker Joselu for a reported £5m.

The 27-year-old, who has played at Real Madrid, Celta Vigo and Hoffenheim, joined Stoke for £5.75m from German side Hannover 96 in June 2015.

Spaniard Joselu spent last season on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, scoring six goals in 24 games.

He will be Magpies boss Rafael Benitez's sixth summer signing since being promoted to the Premier League.

Newcastle, who lost 2-0 to Tottenham on Sunday in their opening game of the season, have signed defenders Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo and midfielders Mikel Merino, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy.

Former Spain Under-21 international Joselu, who made two appearances for Real Madrid, scored four goals in 27 appearances in his only season in the Premier League for Stoke.

Newcastle have been targeting the 27-year-old Spaniard, as well as Arsenal's Lucas Perez, in recent weeks as Benitez attempts to add firepower to his team.

Joselu, a £5.75million signing from Hannover in June 2015, struck only four times in 27 appearances during his first season at Stoke.
He spent the last campaign on loan at Deportivo la Coruna, where he managed six goals in 24 run-outs.
Benitez has repeatedly expressed his frustration in recent weeks at the club's relative lack of transfer activity.

Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for Stoke striker Joselu, Sky Sports News understands.

The 27-year-old travelled to Tyneside for a medical on Monday with negotiations ongoing, and the Magpies are optimistic of completing a £5m swoop.

The signing would come as a boost to manager Rafael Benitez on a day which saw the club confirm that defenders Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett will be sidelined by injury for several weeks.

Newcastle sign forward Joselu from Stoke City for £5m

Newcastle have completed the signing of forward Joselu from Stoke City for a fee of £5m.

The 27-year-old has signed a three-year deal at St James' Park and becomes the fifth addition to Rafa Benitez's senior squad this summer.

Joselu joined Stoke from Hannover in the summer of 2015 and he scored four goals in 22 Premier League appearances in his first season.

But the former Spain Under-21 international was loaned out last season, spending 2016-17 in Spain with Deportivo La Coruna, scoring six times in all competitions before his stay was cut short by an Achilles injury.

"I feel very happy, because I have signed for a very big club. I'm very happy to be part of this club, and so excited," said Joselu.

"I'm looking forward to getting to know my team-mates, the city, the training ground, the stadium and all the supporters. I'm very happy to be here."

Benítez added: "We have known Joselu since his days at the Real Madrid academy, and we know that he has the potential to do well for us.

"Obviously he has experience of English football and the Premier League and that was another thing we took into consideration. We think if we can exploit his full potential he will be a good signing for us.

"He knows and accepts the challenge we've given him at Newcastle United and he's keen to come and fight for a position in the team."
