Chelsea are weighing up a January bid to try to hijack Liverpool and Arsenal's interest in Monaco star Thomas Lemar as the club consider ways of increasing head coach Antonio Conte's options.

Arsenal and Liverpool both failed with offers for Lemar during the summer, with the Reds ready to revive their interest in the New Year.

But Telegraph Sport can reveal that Chelsea hold a strong and genuine interest in Lemar, and are seriously considering making a bid of their own.

The Blues would have to break their transfer record, which stands at £57 million for Alvaro Morata, to land Lemar who is valued at £80m.

Chelsea have the advantage over Arsenal and Liverpool of being able to offer players, either on loan or permanaently, to Monaco in the other direction. And the Blues will hope that Michael Emenalo's switch to Monaco as the French club's sporting director could give them a boost if they go ahead with a move for 22-year-old Lemar.

Monaco were adamant they would not sell Lemar in the summer, but the club are out of Europe and trail Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain ny nine points. They are planning an overhaul of their first-team squad and Academy, which means Lemar is expected be sold to the highest bidder, either in January or next summer, to help finance that.

Lemar is predominantly a left-footed player, which Chelsea are short of, but he can play across a variety of different positions. He would strengthen Conte's attacking options, but could also give him another option at left wing-back.

Chelsea failed with a bid for Juventus left-back Alex Sandro and remain interested in the wantaway Brazilian. They have also checked on Porto's Alex Telles and Augsburg's Philipp Max. It appears unlikely the Blues would try to sign both Lemar and Sandro, so they may have to choose between the pair.

Conte has again expressed fears that his current squad is not big enough to cope with combining Premier League and Champions League campaigns, particularly following Chelsea's last-16 draw against Barcelona. Chelsea will try to address that in January.

As well as looking at left-sided options, the club will try again to sign midfielder Ross Barkley from Everton and are looking for another striker. Barkley turned down a move to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day while he recovered from injury. But the 24 year-old, who is also a target of Tottenham Hotspur, is nearly fit again and is open-minded over his future.

Liverpool have identified £90million-rated Thomas Lemar as the man they want to replace Philippe Coutinho.

Anfield officials have made contact with his club, French champions Monaco, to re-start negotiations for a player they tried to get last summer.

France international midfielder Lemar is also wanted by Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, but has indicated he is leaning towards the lure of Kop boss Jurgen Klopp and his emerging young team.

The Gunners tried to get the 22-year-old on deadline day in August, and were expected to move again for him, but now fear the player would prefer a switch to Anfield.

Lemar is widely considered to be one of the best young attacking talents in Europe and getting him would soften the blow of losing Coutinho, with the question now not if the Brazilian will leave Anfield, but when, and for how much.

Liverpool have admitted defeat in their attempts to persuade him to ignore the overtures of Barcelona, after he made clear he will not agree a new, improved contract because he has set his heart on a move to the Nou Camp.

There is now an understanding within the Spanish club that they could get their man IF they conduct negotiations seriously and sensitively.

That means no repeat of last summer’s crass attempts to prise the player out of Anfield at a knock-down price and also a serious, achievable fee which does not include the unlikely performance-related add-ons proposed in August.

Liverpool have not set a price for Coutinho, and there have yet to be any firm offers from the Nou Camp. But it is understood any fee would have to exceed a £120m base price, with clauses that could bring extra cash.

They are now braced for a firm offer, which could arrive as early as this weekend.

Indications from the Catalan capital suggest it could reach around a £100m base price, with £40m in potential add-ons.

As an opening gambit, that would be close enough to allow talks to proceed — and could even mean Coutinho has already played his last game for Liverpool, after being ruled out of the FA Cup derby showdown with neighbours Everton on Friday following a scan on a thigh injury.

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has hinted his club may be softening their stance over selling Liverpool target Thomas Lemar this month.

Jardim stated only last week that Monaco were “not in the habit” of making significant sales during the January transfer window.

The Ligue 1 side are mindful a host of key players departed last summer, including Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Kylian Mbappe.

But speaking at a media conference on Monday, Jardim left open the possibility Lemar could be prised away from the Stade Louis-II this month.

We are not used to selling in the winter,” the Monaco coach was quoted as saying in l'Equipe.

“But the transfer window lasts until the end of the month and many things can happen.”

Lemar has been on Liverpool's radar for some time with the club having failed in an attempt to sign the France international on deadline day last summer.

While continuing to monitor developments, Liverpool have as yet no plans to make a bid to sign Lemar this month, despite having sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142million.

Arsenal, who similarly were unable to agree a deal for Lemar in August, are also still tracking the 22-year-old, along with Chelsea.
