Everton hoping to sign £25 million Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun in January transfer window

Everton aim to solve their striker shortage with the £25 million capture of Besiktas’ Cenk Tosun. Sam Allardyce hopes to complete a deal early in the transfer window, securing a player he has tracked at previous clubs. He would become the first recruit of the Allardyce era. Everton have been desperate for more firepower since the start of the season after being unable to replace Romelu Lukaku following his sale to Manchester United last summer. They will press ahead in seeking to conclude negotiations for the 26-year-old Turkish forward who has enjoyed a productive campaign for Besiktas, helping them into the Champions League knockout stages.
He would be giving up the chance of playing in Europe by moving to the Premier League in January.
Although he was born in Germany, and began his career at Eintracht Frankfurt, Tosun’s reputation has grown since his move to Turkey, where he switched nationality.
Everton have been relying heavily on youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin since the start of the season. Spanish youngster Sandro has struggled to adapt to English football, Wayne Rooney has featured in a deeper role and, despite some important contributions, Oumar Niasse is not a long-term solution, short of the necessary quality Allardyce needs.
Since being appointed, Allardyce is unbeaten, but recognises the need for more attacking threat. His reign so far has been built on defensive excellence, largely by design but also compulsion given the lack of options further forward.
His January business is vital to ensure there is a greater balance between attack and defence at Goodison Park. He has already ended any possibility of Everton being involved in a fight for survival, but his next challenge is to show he can evolve the style of play beyond a rearguard action.
His January deals are pivotal to ensure he can do so.
