Maurizio Sarri has moved to try to position himself at the front of the queue to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea as Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed his departure from Napoli.

Chelsea have been deliberating over a number of potential candidates, including Luis Enrique, but Napoli manager Sarri is pushing hard to land the job ahead of the Spaniard.

Telegraph Sport can reveal he has employed an English-based intermediary to try to convince the Stamford Bridge club he is the right candidate to succeed head coach Conte, who is expected to be sacked.

And there are other moves behind the scenes aimed at making a Chelsea move for Sarri as smooth as possible.

Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to take over at Napoli, whose president De Laurentiis effectively announced Sarri's departure with a message posted on Twitter that read: "I'd like to thank Maurizio Sarri for his valuable contribution to the Napoli cause. He brought joy and prestige to Naples and Napoli fans all over the world with an entertaining brand of football that drew praise from all quarters. Well done, Maurizio."

Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg have offered Sarri a £5.2million-a-year contract and want an answer by the weekend, but Sarri is waiting to see if Chelsea make a move.

Sources in Italy claim that talks have taken place aimed at convincing Napoli to allow Sarri, whose contract contained a £7m release clause, join Chelsea for free if they let David Luiz to move in the opposite direction.

Luiz fell out of favour under Conte and also suffered recurring knee injury problems this season. He has one year remaining on his contract and, aged 31, is yet to hold talks over an extension.

Finding a buyer for Luiz may well be attractive to Chelsea, who paid £34m to re-sign the Brazilian from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016. His value has dropped significantly over recent months and there are major concerns over his ability to play regularly in the future.

There are also suggestions that Willian would support the appointment of Sarri, who is viewed as an attacking coach.

Willian is another player who has grown unhappy under Conte and the winger is expected to ask to leave Chelsea if the former Juventus manager remains in his post.

But, despite interest from Manchester United, Willian would be prepared to stay at Stamford Bridge if Sarri came in.

Sarri, who speaks English, has not won any major trophies in his managerial career and has been involved in a number of controversial incidents.

In 2016, he was accused of being a homophobe by Roberto Mancini, who was in charge of Inter Milan at the time, and subsequently fined 20,000 Euros. And, this season, he had to apologise for sexist comments made to a female reporter.

Chelsea would no doubt want guarantees over the behaviour of Sarri, who is a chain smoker, before making any sort of firm offer to him.

Former Barcelona manager Enrique would be a far safer appointment, but the Spaniard will need to lower his wage demands.

Enrique had been the overwhelming favourite to succeed Conte, but Chelsea started to look elsewhere after finding out the 48-year-old would want to earn over £10m-a-year.

Conte has been left in the dark over his Chelsea future since winning the FA Cup on Saturday and returned to Italy for Andrea Pirlo’s tribute match.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, he will consider taking a break from management if he is sacked and that could be expensive for Chelsea, who face a potential compensation bill of £9m.

Conte has seen the Italian national post go to Mancini and PSG appointed Thomas Tuchel, which means he could wait for another big European job to become available before jumping back into management.

Other than Sarri and Enrique, Chelsea had been interested in Mauricio Pochettino but the Argentine is expected to sign a new Tottenham Hotspur contract after holding positive talks with chairman Daniel Levy.

While the bitter battle between Chelsea and Conte rages on in the background, the club will officially confirm Sarri as the new head coach with Blues legend Gianfranco Zola joining his backroom team.

But the 59-year has a difficult task ahead of him, with the Blues’ first pre-season game scheduled for July 23 against Perth Glory.

Hazard will not have returned from his break after the World Cup by then, but Chelsea will seek talks with the Belgian’s representatives over his future.

Chelsea will try to convince Hazard that the appointment of Sarri, together with a number of new signings including Jorginho, Daniele Rugani and Aleksandr Golovin can help the club challenge for the top titles again.

A new contract worth over £300,000-a-week remains on the table, but there is a feeling around the 27-year-old that, following such a good World Cup, that it is time for a new challenge.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in Hazard, but, even if he expresses a desire to leave, Chelsea value him over the £200million world record fee Paris Saint-Germain paid for Neymar.

Both Hazard and Courtois have said they will decide their futures after the World Cup and Real are expected to make it clear in the coming days whether or not they will bid for the goalkeeper.

Chelsea will listen to offers for Courtois as long as they can secure a replacement and Roma’s Alisson Becker is their top choice, but there is an acceptance this could be a difficult summer with the Premier League transfer deadline closing on August 9.

Barcelona remain interested in signing Willian and he could be replaced by Golovin, who has been the subject of talks between Chelsea and CSKA Moscow.

While it will not be Sarri’s responsibility to try to convince Hazard and Courtois to stay, he must work very quickly to try to impress his methods on Chelsea’s squad.

The biggest change could come at the back, as Sarri has generally played with a back four, rather than the back three or back five employed by Conte.

This is already a source of concern among Chelsea squad, as the team was built around Conte’s defensive set up and the players fit the system. Central defender Daniele Rugani is expected to join and could partner Antonio Rudiger in a central defensive pair, but the full-back positions could be a big problem.

Cesar Azpilicueta has not played regularly at full-back for two years, having been moved to the right of a back three by Conte, while Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso are not conventional full-backs.

What did he do at Napoli?



Juventus have dominated the Italian league - winning seven titles in a row - but no side has come closer to them in that time than Napoli, who finished four points behind their rivals last season.

Sarri comes with a reputation as an attacking manager, with Napoli's haul of 94 goals in the 2016-17 league campaign remaining the highest number scored in a Serie A season since the turn of the century.

In his three years in charge, Napoli scored 251 league goals - more than any other side in the Italian top flight.

He is Chelsea's sixth Italian manager since Gianluca Vialli in 1998, following Claudio Ranieri, Ancelotti, Roberto di Matteo and Conte.

Despite his success domestically, he failed to guide the Naples club past the last-16 stage of the Champions League, finishing third in their group last season behind Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk.

He joined Napoli in 2015 after guiding Empoli to the top flight. Chelsea is his first managerial job outside his home country and he has yet to win a major trophy.

Sarri never made it as a player and, unable to make a living as a footballer, he worked as a foreign currency trader at the Banca Toscana.

He was attached to the international department, which involved business trips to Europe's financial centres, including the City of London - but the role never stoked his imagination quite like football did.

He coached part-time, hopping from one Tuscan town to another and in 2001, when foreign currency traders like him were no longer as useful to banks as Italy prepared to adopt the euro, Sarri decided to take a leap of faith and leave his well-paid, regular-hours role, for what he says is "the only job I would do for free".

Maurizio Sarri: Chelsea name ex-Napoli boss as Antonio Conte's successor

Maurizio Sarri says he wants to bring "entertaining football" to Chelsea after becoming their manager on a three-year deal.

The 59-year-old replaces fellow Italian Antonio Conte, who was sacked on Friday after two years at Stamford Bridge.

Sarri led Napoli to two second-place finishes in his three seasons in charge of the Serie A side, who named Carlo Ancelotti as his successor in May.

"It is an exciting new period in my career," said Sarri.

"I hope we can provide some entertaining football for our fans and that we will be competing for trophies at the end of the season, which is what this club deserves."

He is the 13th managerial appointment by Blues owner Roman Abramovich since his takeover of the club in 2003, including Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink on two occasions.

Sarri's appointment had been widely expected, with Chelsea agreeing compensation to bring him to Stamford Bridge because he had two years left on his Napoli deal and had remained on the Italian club's payroll after Ancelotti's arrival.
