Juan Mata: Manchester United offer midfielder new contract



Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has been offered a new contract.

Mata, 31, has scored 45 goals in 218 appearances for United since joining from Chelsea in 2014, with his current deal set to expire this month.

Uncertainty had surrounded the Spain international's future but United confirmed he had been offered a fresh deal in their list of released players.

It had already been confirmed Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia would leave the club this summer.

At under-23 level, new contracts have been offered to midfielder Aidan Barlow, goalkeepers Alex Fojticek and Paul Woolston, plus Italian defender Luca Ercolani.

Regan Poole and James Wilson, who have both played for United's first team but spent last season on loan at Newport County and Aberdeen respectively, have been released.

Zak Dearnley, Tom Sang, Callum Whelan and Matty Willock have also been let go, in addition to Matthew Olosunde, Tyrell Warren, DJ Buffonge, Callum Gribbin, Millen Baars, Josh Bohui and James Thompson.

Juan Mata has reached an agreement on a new contract tieing him to Manchester United for the next three years. The deal will run until the Spaniard is 34, with the intention of him remaining at the club after he retires as a player.

Mata’s current contract, which is worth £140,000 a week, expires in just over two weeks’ time, on 30 June. The Spain midfielder had attracted interest from Barcelona and, although talks with United have been going on for months, he had initially failed to reach an agreement on his salary and the duration of the deal and appeared set to walk away without renewing. Herrera and Antonio Valencia had already departed in similar circumstances as their existing deals concluded.

Mata’s salary will not change significantly but the three-year contract contrasts well with the one year offered initially. He played 32 times last season, scoring six goals. He was taken off at half-time in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. Despite playing an increasingly limited role, Ole Gunnar Solskjær considers him a useful squad player.

If Mata sees out his contract until 2022, he would have been at the club for eight years since signing for £37.5m under David Moyes. He has scored 47 goals and provided 39 assists in 238 games at the club.

Manchester United is delighted to announce that Juan Mata has signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2021, with the option to extend for a further year.

During his time at United, Mata has won an Emirates FA Cup, a League Cup, the UEFA Europa League and FA Community Shield.
The midfielder has been capped by Spain on 41 occasions and was a member of the squad that won the 2010 World Cup, as well as the 2012 European Championship.

Juan Mata said: “It is a real honour to continue to represent this amazing club and our incredible fans. I have been at Manchester United for five years and I am proud to call Old Trafford my home.

“I am looking forward to working with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and his fantastic coaching staff; the vision that they have for the club is truly exciting and I am so happy that I will be a part of that.”
