West Ham fear missing out to Valencia in race for Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gómez
• 22-year-old striker has £45m release clause in contract

West Ham face an uphill battle to convince Maxi Gómez to choose them over Valencia after lodging a £25m bid for the Celta Vigo striker.

Manuel Pellegrini is determined to continue improving his squad after signing Pablo Fornals from Villarreal on Friday and has long been an admirer of Gómez. However, West Ham fear they will miss out on the Uruguayan to Valencia, who can offer the 22-year-old Champions League football.

It is understood that West Ham’s offer for Gómez has not been accepted. His contract contains a £45m release clause and Celta Vigo are using the interest in him to seek a higher fee.

Another complication is that Gómez wants assurances that he will not be back-up to Marko Arnautovic, West Ham’s first-choice striker. He will not move to the London Stadium if he is not part of Pellegrini’s favoured starting line-up.

Pellegrini initially wanted to sign Gómez when Arnautovic was trying to move to Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League in January and he has continued to hold an interest in the Uruguayan.

West Ham, who have told Manchester United that Issa Diop is not for sale this summer, have ambitious plans under Pellegrini and do not want their summer spending to stop at Fornals, a 23-year-old attacking midfielder who has been capped twice by Spain.

Pellegrini, who oversaw a 10th-place finish in his first season at the London Stadium, wants to play attacking football next season. However, he is also aware that West Ham need to improve defensively and is targeting Eibar’s Joan Jordán. The defensive midfielder could be available for £13m.

In an effort to raise funds to finance the ambitious spree, Pellegrini will listen to offers for Sam Byram, Angelo Ogbonna, Jordan Hugill, Pedro Obiang, Reece Oxford and Javier Hernández.

However West Ham have no intention of losing Diop, who has been linked with a £45m move to United . They have made clear that the promising French defender is not for sale.

West Ham wait for Maxi Gomez's decision on £44.5m move from Celta Vigo

West Ham United hope to find out this week whether or not they have been successful in trying to convince Maxi Gómez to turn down Valencia and move to the London Stadium.

The Hammers have also been offered the chance to sign free agent Mario Balotelli, but manager Manuel Pellegrini has yet to show any interest in the former Manchester City and Liverpool centre-forward.

Gómez had been leaning towards the prospect of Champions League football with Valencia, but West Ham attempted to hijack the deal by offering the striker better terms.

West Ham are prepared to pay a record £44.5 million to sign him from Celta Vigo and have also offered to make the 22-year-old the highest paid player at the club.

Negotiations are continuing and West Ham are now waiting to see whether or not their bid has tempted Gómez to contemplate leaving Spain.

West Ham need to at least one striker after selling Marko Arnautovic to Shanghai SIPG for £22.4m after also allowing Lucas Pérez to join Alaves and releasing Andy Carroll.

Another or Pellegrini’s targets, Salomon Rondón, could follow former Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez to Dalian Yifang in China, which leaves West Ham currently focusing on Gómez.

Should Gómez join Valencia, then West Ham will have to quickly turn to alternative targets with Torino’s Andrea Belotti and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson among the strikers they have looked at.

Whether or not Pellegrini could be persuaded to take a chance on Balotelli, who has been offered to West Ham after his Marseille contract expired, remains to be seen.

West Ham's deal to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez is off, according to Sky sources.

West Ham offered Celta Vigo the £45m release clause but could not agree a payment structure.

Gomez is now close to a move to Valencia, who have offered cash and players as part of the deal.

The 22-year-old is expected in Spain on Wednesday to finalise the move.
