Reports: Smalling to join Roma

Reports in Italy claim Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is close to making a shock move to Roma.

The news was first broken by Il Tempo journalist Alessandro Austini, who tweeted Smalling was the ‘Mr X’ Roma had targeted to bolster their backline.

That was then followed by Sky Sport Italia claiming the Giallorossi had agreed a ?3m dry loan for the Englishman.

The broadcaster adds he is now in the process of finalising his move, which does not include an option to buy, and will soon travel to Rome for a medical.

The 29-year-old joined United from Fulham in 2010 and has gone on to make over 300 appearances for the Red Devils, winning two Premier League titles, two domestic cups and the Europa League.

He also has 31 England caps but fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the arrival of Harry Maguire and was dropped for the 2018 World Cup.

Smalling is set to be the pacey centre-back Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has long requested and the third United player to join a Serie A club this summer after Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, both of whom signed for Inter.

Matteo Darmian didn't cut it at Manchester United, but what a professional. Never once complained and always gave what he had when called upon. Wish him well for the future at Parma.

Matteo Darmian: Manchester United defender joins Parma on four-year deal

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has joined Italian Serie A side Parma on a four-year deal.

The 29-year-old was signed by former Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal from Italian side Torino for a reported fee of £12.7m in July 2015.

The Italy international went on to make 92 appearances for the club, helping them to the FA Cup in his first season.

However, he made only seven appearances for United last season and has not featured at all this term.

Darmian had played only 13 times for the club since December 2017 and his contract was due to expire in 2020.

His move comes after fellow defender Chris Smalling left to join Roma on loan while forwards Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku have both joined Inter Milan.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been willing to let Darmian leave, with the Italian having said he was keen to go 12 months ago.

29歲的達美安（Matteo Darmian）在2015年由時任領隊雲高爾從拖連奴帶到曼聯，但一直未能夠踢出表現，在前任主帥摩連奴及現任魔君蘇斯克查麾下都成為邊緣人；今季頭4場英超，達美安連出戰大軍都沒有份。

一直有不少傳聞指達美安會回歸意甲，如今終於由帕爾馬以400萬歐元成功羅致，雙方簽約至2023年。紅魔聲明中表示：「曼聯所有人多感謝達美安的貢獻，祝他前程似錦。」

曼聯今夏以重金收購了右閘雲比沙卡、中堅哈利麥佳亞，最近開始清除冗員，早前已經把中堅史摩寧借用至羅馬，把前鋒阿歷斯山齊士借用至國際米蘭，他們將會跟達美安在意甲鬥法。

Manchester – the club, the people, the city, has always held a special place in my heart but I still have as much desire to play regular first team football as I did when I joined the club over 9 years ago.

AS Roma is a fantastic club, with a lot of history and I’m relishing the  new challenge they have offered me.

I’m excited to experience a new league, experience the culture and get really stuck in to support Roma’s domestic and European ambitions.
