Injuries cloud Dutch prospects for the World Cup

FRANKFURT,Germany (AP) -The Netherlands was still uncertain how serious the injuries were to three of its starters who were pulled off the field during a bruising warmup game against Australia over the weekend.
The medical team was likely to have a full assessment upon the arrival of the team in Germany late Tuesday, officials said Monday.
Less than a week ahead of the Netherlands' World Cup opener against Serbia-Montenegro in Leipzig, the injury list stands at five. The Dutch team also plays Argentina and Ivory Coast in Group C.
Defenders Kew Jaliens and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and midfielders Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder and Philip Cocu were all treating injuries. At least four would be considered starters for the World Cup.
During a 1-1 draw with Australia in Rotterdam on Sunday, Sneijder, Cocu and Van Bronckhorst all came off the field with injures, compounding the midfield problems for coach Marco van Basten.
He said he would decide on Wednesday whether to retain the creative midfielder Van der Vaart, who is struggling to come back from a double ankle operation. If he decides on cutting Van der Vaart, Van Basten would pick a replacement from the under-21 team which became European Champion on Sunday.
He ruled out a return of veteran midfielders Edgar Davids or Clarence Seedorf.
Sneijder had replaced Van der Vaart with poise and confidence during the preparation campaign, but when he went for a risky drive on Sunday his right foot was blocked by a defender and he had to be taken off by medics.
"It was some sight in the dressing room,'' Van Basten said.
The injuries to Van der Vaart and Sneijder could leave a huge hole in midfield and cut off the supply to the potent Premier League forward line of Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arsenal's Robin Van Persie and Chelsea's Arjen Robben.
If both remain injured, Van Basten might have to pull Van Persie back to midfield to make sure the passes keep coming.

Holland coach Marco van Basten has called on young midfielders Nigel de Jong and Stijn Schaars to act on standby for his World Cup squad.
Oranje are suffering with a raft of injuries, with Wesley Sneijder, Kew Jaliens, Philip Cocu, Rafael van der Vaart and Giovanni van Bronckhorst all struggling with their fitness.
Although van Basten's medical team are hopeful the quintet will recover for the tournament in Germany, the Dutch chief has opted to introduce back-ups to the training camp as a precautionary measure.
Schaars graduates from the Under-21 side for the first time, where he was captain of the team that won their European Championship on Sunday, and could be included in the full squad any time up until 2pm on Saturday - 24 hours before Holland's first game with Serbia & Montenegro.
De Jong is included in van Basten's plans for the first time since he moved to the Bundesliga to join Hamburg from Ajax in January, and the versatile star is well placed to benefit should any of the five stars not prove their fitness for the tournament.
Indeed the 21-year-old will travel to the Dutch base in Hinterzarten straight away, with Schaars joining the other 24 players who leave Holland on Tuesday.
