Tony Warner, deputising for the injured Antti Niemi, showed the hopefully-embarrassed Jens Lehmann a thing or two in Fulham's game at the Emirates, throwing himself around the Arsenal turf to deny Tomas Rosicky, Alexander Hleb and Cesc Fabregas. He may have conceded one more goal than the German but he won the plaudits. Lawrie Sanchez would have preferred the points, but plaudits are still nice.

Graeme Murty was part of the hugely impressive Reading backline that kept the champions at bay at Old Trafford on Sunday. Steve Coppell organised his defence superbly and Murty helped limit United's clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities to a mimimum to give 10-man Reading a well-deserved point. His captain's performance was symbolic of the entire Royals team's efforts.

Wee Ross Wallace slotted in nicely at left-back for Roy Keane's Sunderland and it was his trickery that set up ex-Newcastle man Michael Chopra for the winner.

The converted winger had earlier provided Ethutu with a great chance to win the points for the Black Cats but his swivel and perfectly executed cross in the last minute gave Chopra the perfect opportunity to win over his Sunderland doubters.

Paul McShane was one of Roy Keane's summer purchases and the £1.5 million the Irishman paid West Brom for his services looks to be money well spent.

McShane was a colossus in the heart of the Sunderland defence and Tottenham's expensively assembled front line looked impotent against his aerial presence. An old-fashioned centre-half's display.

Micah Richards has put down an early marker for his international claims with a fearless performance on the opening day at Upton Park. Richards led the way for Manchester City showing Sven Goran Eriksson's five new starters the sort of appetite needed to win Premiership games. The versatile young player looks most effective in the heart of the defence.

Andy Todd burst from midfield into the Portsmouth penalty box and executed a dramatic late diving header which secured Derby County their first Premiership point of the season. His goal capped an all-round impressive debut and ended a personal goal-drought of nearly eighteen months. Dad Colin, a Rams legend, will be proud and Derby fans have a new Todd to cheer.

Steven Gerrard struck a late goal to win Liverpool the points at Villa Park. It was a strike worthy of winning any game, an expertly hit free-kick from thirty yards out which whistled past the outstretched palm of Stuart Taylor to break Villa hearts. It is difficult to come up with new ways to underline Gerrard's importance to his team but if any man deserves a Premier League winner's medal it is Stevie G.

Olivier Kapo arrived in Birmingham from Juventus in the summer and was another debutant who impressed over the weekend. Kapo cut in from the left to score for City at Stamford Bridge with a powerful strike from the edge of the area to equalise for Steve Bruce's men and ensure Chelsea had an uncomfortable start to their title bid.

Martin Petrov was one of five new signings on display for Manchester City at Upton Park and showed enough to suggest he will make an impact in the Premiership this year.

The Bulgarian winger worried and harried the West Ham defence and displayed a fine repertoire of shooting skills.

Obafemi Martins played a large part in ensuring Sam Allardyce left the Reebok Stadium smiling on Saturday when he opened his Premiership account with a brace of goals.

The first was an acrobatic bicycle kick from six yards which followed good work by James Milner and the second an ambitious long-range effort which took a deflection to creep past Jaaskelainen.

Dave Kitson's impressive 37 second performance at Old Trafford almost won him the remaining place up front but that honour is instead bestowed upon Roque Santa Cruz.

Mark Hughes has done a great bit of business in bringing the Paragyuan to Ewood Park, and the big striker came from the bench to power a header home for Rovers in a bad-tempered affair at the Riverside. Santa Cruz is coming to town indeed.

Manager of the Week goes to a certain Sven Goran Eriksson. To hear his name chanted heartily (by non-critical voices) at an English football ground is not something that could have been envisaged following his limp retreat from the national job.

But his new signings seem to have gelled immediately and he has fired a retaliatory shot across the bows of his numerous critics with a win in Manchester City's tricky opening day game at Upton Park. Let's see if it lasts.

What a fickle mistress footballing form is. So if Tony Warner, superb in Fulham's opener at Arsenal seven days ago, would kindly shuffle along taking his recent calamitous errors with him, and make way for Steve Harper in TOTW. Harper kept a clean sheet against Aston Villa and proved himself an able deputy once more for the injured Shay Given.

For the second week in a row, Micah Richards makes an appearance in TOTW. The 18-year-old was man of the match in the hard fought Manchester derby and muscled Carlos Tevez out of the game. He made several timely interceptions and his positional sense and awareness were spot on. He is certain to feature for England in midweek against Germany.

Alongside him is his captain and fellow centre-half Richard Dunne. The big Irishman was all over the park, covering his backline and his performance went a long way to ensure that City's unbeaten record stayed just that. Eriksson appears to be building his team around these two defenders. He could do a lot worse.

Andre Bikey had his hands full playing against Andy Johnson at the Madjeski, but the big Cameroonian was strong enough to keep a clean sheet and not concede a penalty either. Johnson has a fine goal-scoring record against Reading but Bikey ensured he would not be adding to that this weekend.

Steed Malbranque rushed to the rescue of his beleaguered manager Martin Jol with two early goals to settle Spurs' nerves against a Derby side who had no response to the home side's fire-power. Malbranque had his best game in a Spurs shirt so far and his brace got Spurs' season back on track.

Alongside him Jermaine Jenas had the sort of game that justified the hefty price Spurs paid Newcastle for his services all those years ago. Jenas helped himself to a goal, breaking from the half-way line, beating several challenges before calmly slotting home a wonderful solo effort.

Local-lad-made-good Mark Noble stepped up to the penalty spot and coolly slotted home West Ham's winner at St. Andrew's against newly promoted Birmingham City. Noble hit the post earlier on with a free-kick and his energy made him the stand out performer on the park.

Steven Gerrard gets in TOTW. Again. Gerrard sprayed passes around with merry abandon, put in some excellent tackles (one in particular on Kalou prevented a certain goal) and gave another midfield master class. It was his slide-rule pass to Torres which set up the Spaniard for Liverpool's goal against Chelsea.

Steven Hunt left the Reading pitch to a standing ovation when he limped out of his side's win against Everton. He deserved it (the applause, not the injury) for another fine display on the left-wing, the highlight of which was the winning goal. He reacted quickest to a throw-in and showed a decent touch to prod the ball home.

Up front, Wigan giant Emile Heskey is welcomed back in to TOTW after a vintage display against Roy Keane's Sunderland. Heskey gave the Black Cats centre-halves a torrid afternoon and blasted the ball past £9million man Craig Gordon for the opening goal. 'Heskey for England', crows Chris Hutchings. Hmmm.

Nwankwo Kanu was Portsmouth's star performer as their good start to the season continued with a win over Bolton. The ex-Arsenal man had a hand in all three Pompey goals, scoring the first, setting up his compatriot John Utaka (who had an excellent game too) for the second and winning the penalty which Matty Taylor converted.

Sven Goran Erikkson is once more the Soccernet MOTW. It would be rude not to really. Three wins out of three this week, top of the table, no goals conceded and victorious in the Manchester derby against the champions. It was one of his new signings who sealed the points, but the City faithful will be far happier with their new manager than any of their players.
