FACTBOX-Soccer-Brazil and AC Milan playmaker Kaka
Dec 16 (Reuters) - Factbox on World Footballer of the Year
candidate Kaka.
Born: April 22, 1982 in Brasilia, Brazil
* Makes an immediate impact for Sao Paulo scoring 12 goals
in 27 appearances in the 2001 season.
* Plays just 18 minutes in the 2002 World Cup in which
Brazil go on to triumph.
* Moves to AC Milan in 2003 and makes his debut on Sept 1 in
a 2-0 win over Ancona. He goes on to score 10 league goals and
four Champions League goals in his first season and then spurs
Milan to the Italian title in 2004.
* Helps Brazil to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in
2006, during which he signs a contract extension with Milan
which is supposed to keep him at the San Siro until 2011.
* Real Madrid make their interest well-known following the
World Cup and Kaka firmly establishes himself as one of the best
in the world as he inspires Milan to their seventh European Cup
title in 2007.
* Wins FIFPro world player of the year 2007 and is later
revealed as European footballer of the year.
FACTBOX-Soccer-Portugal and Man United winger Cristiano Ronaldo
Dec 16(Reuters) - Factbox on World Footballer of the Year
candidate Cristiano Ronaldo:
Born: Feb.5 1985 in Funchal, Madeira
* His late father Jose Dinis Aveiro gave him the second
given name Ronaldo in honour of former U.S. president Ronald
Reagan.
* He began attracting attention at the age of 10 and both
of Madeira's top teams Maritimo and Nacional scouted him. He
played his youth football at Nacional before joining Sporting
Lisbon, arch-rivals to his boyhood favourites Benfica.
* The turning point in his career came in July 2003 when he
impressed Manchester United's players and manager Alex Ferguson
with an outstanding performance against them when United came
to inaugurate the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon. He joined
Manchester United shortly afterwards aged just 18 for 12.5
million pounds.
* With his clever step-overs, fast footwork with both feet
and good heading ability, he has now played more than 200
matches for United, scoring over 60 goals.
* He courted controversy in the 2006 World Cup finals when
he became embroiled in an incident involving his United
club-mate Wayne Rooney during England's World Cup quarter-final
against Portugal. Cameras caught him winking at his bench as
Rooney was sent off. There was speculation he might have to
leave United, but instead he stayed and helped United win the
Premier League last season.
* Although his 2006-07 season started under the shadow of
the World Cup controversy, it ended on a high when he was named
both Portugal's Footballer of the Year and England's Footballer
of the Year. He was also Manchester United's Player of the Year
and the fans Player of the Year and earlier this month was
runner-up to Kaka in the Ballon D'Or or European Footballer of
the Year poll.
FACTBOX-Soccer-Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi
Dec 16 (Reuters) - Factbox on Lionel Messi, who is one of
three players short-listed for the 2007 FIFA World Player
award:
* Born Rosario, Santa Fe in Argentina on June 24, 1987.
* Joined Barcelona as a 13-year-old in 2000 and went on to
star in the youth ranks with Frank Rijkaard giving him his
debut in the senior side in a friendly against Porto in
November 2003 at the age of 16.
* He led Argentina to triumph in the World Youth
Championship in the Netherlands in June 2005, scoring two
penalties in his side's 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the final.
Like Maradona before him, ended the tournament with the
best player and top scorer trophies.
* He made his debut for the full Argentine national squad
in a friendly against Hungary in August 2005, the same
opponents against which Maradona made his debut as a
16-year-old.
But he was sent off less than a minute after stepping onto
the pitch as a substitute after he was adjudged to have elbowed
a defender who pulled his shirt.
* A bureaucratic argument over whether or not he could be
classed as a European Union player meant he did not play for
Barcelona in the 2005-06 season until October. He went on to
score six goals in 17 appearances for Barca as they won the
league title for the second year in a row.
* He missed Barcelona's Champions League triumph against
Arsenal in 2006 after sustaining an injury in the last 16 match
against Chelsea.
* He faced a race against time to make the 2006 World Cup
and played only a bit-part role in the tournament. Coach Jose
Pekerman was heavily criticised for leaving him on the bench as
Argentina exited the tournament after a penalty shoot out
against Germany in the quarter-finals.
* He missed three months of 2006-2007 season after breaking
a bone in his foot, but returned to score a brilliant hat-trick
against Real Madrid in the 3-3 draw between the two sides at
the Nou Camp in March.
Barcelona surrendered a comfortable lead in the title race
to end up in second place behind arch-rivals Real Madrid. Messi
scored 14 goals in the league.
* Frequently compared with the young Diego Maradona, Messi
scored a carbon copy of his virtuoso 1986 World Cup solo effort
against England in a King's Cup match against Getafe in April
2007.
He also punched the ball into the net against city rivals
Espanyol in a goal reminiscent of Maradona's infamous "hand of
god" goal against England.
* He was named FIFPro Young Player of the Year in 2006 and
finished third behind Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2007
European Footballer of the Year award.
