Deisler back in Berlin

On January 16th, Sebastian Deisler announced his retirement from professional football. His reasons were too many operations and a lack oc trust in his dodgy knee. Deisler said at the time: "I have lost my enjoyment of playing the game."

Since then his contract has been on ice at Bayern Munich. Deisler fled the spotlight and broke a lot of contacts. No photos or interviews. The former gifted German international hid himself and his family.

The B.Z. found out: Deisler is making a new start, and not just anywhere, but in Berlin -without football. Deislers Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Florian Holsboer said after Deisler's retirement: "He has to get used to a life without football, a different daily routine. He has to learn to live happily again."

Deisler lives in a spacious apartment in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg.

The former Hertha star looks relaxed. His hair is cut short, he wears polo shirts and shorts. Last Saturday he spent some time in a bar in Grolmanstrasse. Basti was smiling and enjoying life, which was great to see.

Eight months after retiring from football at the age of 26, Sebastian Deisler says he is finally growing up as a person away from the sport.


The former Germany and Bayern Munich star called it a day after a series of injuries and a bout of depression, taking a step back from the world of football to concentrate on having a normal life.


"The business (football) took over me," Deisler said. "I never had time to grow, never the time to become an adult. I did not even have time to make errors in life. I came to the realisation that I was not made for this business."


Deisler put his Munich villa up for sale recently and has been living back in his native Berlin in more modest surroundings in a city centre flat.


A more normal life away from the public glare has allowed the 27-year-old to recharge his batteries and recover completely from a knee problem which had troubled him throughout his prosperous career.


"In the end, I was totally empty," he told the Tagesspiegel am Sonntag newspaper. "I was old, I was tired and I had run so much that my legs could not carry me anymore.


"I could not do anything more."
