EXCLUSIVE: Steven Gerrard contract agreed with Real Madrid
17 June 2010
Steven Gerrard has agreed a deal in principle with Real Madrid but will wait to see who is appointed as the next manager of Liverpool Football Club before making a decision about his future.
The Liverpool captain is of course locked down at the World Cup with the England squad but the player's agent Struan Marshall has allegedly held talks with the Spanish giants and agreed personal terms for his client.
What this means is that should Gerrard opt to leave after the World Cup finals are out of the way, personal terms have already 'unofficially' been agreed and that his agent has indicated his client is up for a move subject to certain conditions relating to the situation at Anfield.
Gerrard then has an option to take up if he so wants but also a get-out clause because he's been honest by saying he wants to see what happens back at his home club.
As far as we're aware, Liverpool have not given permission for Real Madrid to speak to Gerrard - either directly or indirectly (via his agent) - so no transfer fee will have been agreed.
Based on information supplied to us, if Gerrard opted to leave, we think we'd only receive around £17m to £20m for him - unless a bidding war (e.g. Barca step in) erupts. We may be wrong.
We try to be very specific when publishing claims so we'd like to point out that we're not claiming Gerrard is going to sign for Real Madrid. Nor are we claiming to know what Gerrard's decision will be. Gerrard won't even know himself just now.
KOPTALK sources have informed us that if Kenny Dalglish was appointed as manager that Gerrard would definitely remain at Anfield. But because of their connection with Dalglish himself, we have to say that although maybe true, such information is almost certainly biased as they oppose the appointment of Roy Hodgson as manager.
It certainly wouldn't be easy for Gerrard to leave Liverpool but we wouldn't blame him. It makes complete sense to us that his agent is weighing things up while the player is busy with England.
Meanwhile Martin Broughton and Christian Purslow are left to try and push a takeover deal through over the coming weeks but with our preferred bidder having balked at the asking price set by Tom Hicks, you'd have to seriously question whether that's going to happen in time to enable the next Liverpool manager to retain Gerrard along with Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano.
Other parties remain at the negotiating table including one fronted by Peter Kenyon. Please note that Kenyon is an advisor for CAA and an Indian bid. Much more about that on our members site although the editor did touch on this in a non-members editorial earlier today on this website.
