David Moyes admits Everton are unlikely to be able to bring Landon Donovan back to the club any time soon.
The United States international enjoyed a productive loan spell at Goodison Park last season and revealed this week that he would welcome the chance to return to Merseyside.
However, his MLS employers, Los Angeles Galaxy, would only be interested in striking a permanent deal and could ask for as much as £11million for the highly-rated forward.
That would put Donovan out of Everton's price range, as the Toffees board have tightened the purse strings.
Moyes admits he remains keen on the USA ace, who starred at this summer's World Cup, but has begrudgingly accepted that he is set to miss out on the 28-year-old.
Expensive
"Don't you think I've asked my chairman (Bill Kenwright) to make it happen?" said the Scot.
"We'd love to have Landon but he looks too expensive for us and we just don't have it.
"We don't have the finances. The price the MLS want for him is very big and it's an additional problem because of his age.
"All we've done is spend £1m on Magaye Gueye so far. Jermaine Beckford and Jan Mucha were free, so we've spent no money by Premier League standards and will probably be the ones who spend the least this season."
