McClaren sacked by Wolfsburg
Ex-England boss pays the price for wining just five league games
Former England manager Steve McClaren has been sacked by Wolfsburg after less than a year in charge at Volkswagen Arena.
The dismissal does not come as a surprise after a disappointing Bundesliga campaign and the 49-year-old only narrowly avoided being dismissed in Germany's winter break.
Despite spending large amounts of money, most recently in January when reinvesting funds from the sale of Edin Dzeko to Manchester City, McClaren only guided Wolfsburg to 12th position in the league.
The ex-Middlesbrough boss, who arrived in Germany in May having won the Eredivisie title with FC Twente, has therefore been shown the door after Saturday's loss to Hannover and assistant manager Pierre Littbarski is taking over.
A Wolfsburg club statement read "VfL have parted ways with Steve McClaren. Pierre Littbarski is taking over."
McClaren won just five league matches as Wolfsburg boss, drawing eight and also losing eight to leave him with a win percentage of just 24%.
Middlesbrough won the English League Cup in 2004 under McClaren, while they also reached the Uefa Cup final in 2006.
But the former Manchester United coach is infamous for his terrible spell as England manager when he was sacked for failing to qualify for Euro 2008.
