Lionel Messi awarded Ballon d'Or prize



Lionel Messi has won the Fifa Ballon d'Or prize for the best player of 2011 at a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland.

He becomes only the fourth player in history to win the trophy three times.

The Argentine, 24, beat off competition from Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and team-mate Xavi.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson won the presidential award for services to football, while Barcelona's Pep Guardiola was voted coach of the year.

The 70-year-old Scot was presented with the award by Fifa president Sepp Blatter who said: "Elite football is all about results and winning and there is no one better at it than him."

Ferguson praised Manchester United for sharing his vision of the game.

He said: "I have been a very, very lucky manager to have had so many good players who have shared my vision and passion, and that's what makes Manchester United such a special club.

"They retain the courage to play, the courage to try and win."

Messi previously won the prestigious accolade in 2009 and 2010.

He was the man of the match in the Champions League final victory over Manchester United and also won the Primera Division, Spanish Supercopa, Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup last year.

"It's a great personal pleasure for me," said Messi.

"It's the third time I've won it. It's just an amazing honour. I want to thank everyone that's been involved with me - my team-mates, trainers, physios, the coach [Pep Guardiola] and everyone at Barcelona.

"I'd also like to thank the Argentina national team as well."

Messi's Barcelona team-mate Xavi paid tribute to the winner: "He's still young, only 24, and I think he's going to break all the records that exist in this sport.

"He's going to be one of the best footballers in the history of the sport."

Other awards went to Japan's women's World Cup-winning captain Homare Sawa for the women's player; Japan's (male) manager Norio Sasaki coach of the year for women's football; the Japanese FA was awarded the Fifa fair play award and 19-year-old Brazilian Neymar of Santos won the Fifa Puskas award for the best goal of 2011.

Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi has won the 2011 FIFA Ballon d'Or to claim the title of world player of the year for third successive time.

Messi beat Barcelona team-mate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo to emerge triumphant from the final three-man shortlist to scoop the award at Monday evening's Ballon d'Or gala at the Kongresshaus in Zurich.

The 24-year-old becomes only the fourth player in history to win the trophy three times, along with Dutch legends Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten, plus Frenchman Michael Platini.

The Ballon d'Or award caps a hugely successful year in which Messi won the Spanish Liga title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Messi deserved to be ranked among the all-time greats.

"I would agree with that completely,'' Ferguson said. "Critics have always questioned whether players like Pele from the 50s could play today.

"The answer to that is great players would play in any generation. Lionel Messi could play in the 1950s and the present day, as could Di Stefano, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff because they are all great players.

"Lionel Messi without question fits into that category.''

Xavi supported Ferguson's view, saying: "He's still young, only 24, and I think he's going to break all the records that exist in this sport. He's going to be one of the best footballers in the history of the sport.''

Pep Guardiola was named the FIFA Men's Football Coach of the Year, finishing ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho. "I dedicate this trophy to Tito Vilanova, my assistant," Guardiola said. "It's an honour to share the trophy with Mourinho and Ferguson, and with all coaches around the world."

Ferguson had some consolation as he received the FIFA presidential award for services to football and said: "It is an honour for me in the twilight of my life and very, very much appreciated.

"I have been a very, very lucky manager to have had so many good players who have shared my vision and passion, and that's what makes Manchester United such a special club.

"They retain the courage to play, the courage to try and win. You don't always win in football - sometimes you lose but we always try to win."

Neymar claimed the FIFA Puskas Award for the year's best goal, his fine solo effort against Flamengo voted above Wayne Rooney's overhead kick in the Manchester derby and Messi's strike against Arsenal in the second round of the Champions League.

Rooney secured a prestigious accolade, as he found his way on to the fifpro Team of the Year. He was joined in the team by his Manchester United colleague Nemanja Vidic, while nine of the side either play for or operate in Spain.

Santos star Neymar has been awarded the FIFA Puskas Award 2011 for his sensational solo strike against Flamengo, beating Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney to the prize for greatest goal of the year.

The winner was decided by FIFA.com users, with more than 1.3million votes registered in the last month since the Brazilian, Argentinian and Englishman were named as the remaining contenders.

After a shortlist of ten was announced last November, also featuring the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Heather O’Reilly and Giovani dos Santos, the final three were confirmed in December.

Neymar’s goal, scored during a nine-goal thriller in the Brazilian league in July last year, saw the highly-rated 19-year-old dribble past three defenders and complete a one-two with his team-mate before poking the ball past the goalkeeper.

Despite his phenomenal effort, Neymar could not prevent his team from losing the match 5-4, but he will be consoled by claiming an award which was won by Turkish midfielder Hamit Altintop 12 months ago.
