Aston Villa have opened talks with Tottenham over the proposed transfer of Emmanuel Adebayor.
Manager Tim Sherwood has earmarked the 31-year-old as a replacement for Liverpool-bound Christian Benteke.
Tottenham want around £4million for Adebayor but the stumbling block is his wages of £100,000-a-week.
Villa hope to arrange a deal where bonuses can supplement Adebayor's wages.
Sherwood may yet bid for Tottenham's Andros Townsend although the England winger wants to fight for his place at White Hart Lane.
The Villa manager has also enquired about Monaco's exciting forward Anthony Martial. The 19-year-old has been a target for Tottenham this summer and Monaco are reluctant to sell. However, the French league side are open to selling their stars for the right offer.

Villa have completed a £9m deal for left back Jordan Amavi, while former Villa defender Shane Lowry has joined Birmingham on trial.
Tottenham expect Benjamin Stambouli to complete his £6million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain by Monday.
He underwent a medical over the weekend and has agreed a five-year deal.

Daniel Levy has curtailed his notorious hardline negotiating style in order to pave the way for Emmanuel Adebayor's exit this summer.
Aston Villa are in talks with Tottenham over a move for the Togolese striker, who is surplus to requirements under Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs are desperate to get rid of Adebayor, who knows he has no future under Pochettino.
But his £100,000-per-week wages, coupled with Tottenham's initial £5million asking price, is proving a stumbling towards Adebayor's exit.
However, Spurs chairman Levy is willing to be more flexible in his discussions with Villa given the club's urgency in trying to sell the player.
Villa would prefer to take Adebayor on loan, with an option to permanently sign the former Manchester City man for a fixed fee at a later date.

Likewise, Villa would require Spurs to pay a significant percentage of Adebayor's wages to make a deal happen.
Levy has a reputation of being one of Europe's fiercest negotiators, particularly when it comes to selling players.
He successfully negotiated an £86m world-record transfer fee for Gareth Bale's move to Real Madrid in 2013.

VILLA HOPEFUL ON ADEBAYOR

Aston Villa assistant manager Ray Wilkins is hopeful that Emmanuel Adebayor will join the club and confirmed Jordan Ayew will undergo a medical at Villa Park, according to Talksport.

Asked if there is a chance of Adebayor joining Villa, the former Chelsea midfielder said: "I think there is.

"I can only talk for myself, but I'm hoping there is because when Adebayor wants to play, he is extremely effective.

"He knows the Premier League inside out, so he would be a good addition for us."

BREAKING NEWS

Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been at Aston Villa's training ground today, according to Sky sources.

Adebayor did not join Spurs for their pre-season tour of the USA and has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.

Emmanuel Adebayor is set for a medical at Aston Villa as the striker looks set for a switch from Tottenham, according to Sky sources.

Sky reported earlier on Tuesday that the 31-year-old was spotted at Villa's training ground and in the evening while they were playing at Wolves in a friendly, news came through that Adebayor was lined up for a medical on Wednesday.

His future at Spurs looked bleak under Mauricio Pochettino having featured just three times in the Premier League in 2015, and with Villa looking for a new striker to replace Christian Benteke who has joined Liverpool, a move seems to suit all parties.

Adebayor did not travel with the rest of the Tottenham squad for their game in Denver against the MLS All-Stars.

A move to Villa would reunite him with Villa boss Tim Sherwood, under whom he enjoyed some success at White Hart Lane.

Adebayor fell out of favour when Andre Villas Boas was Tottenham head coach, but following the departure of the Portuguese and the appointment of Sherwood in November 2013, Adebayor was reinstated to the first team and scored 14 goals in 24 appearances.

Once Sherwood left at the end of the 2013/14 season, replaced by Pochettino, the Togo striker again found himself out of favour and behind Harry Kane in the pecking order.

Adebayor saw a potential loan move to West Ham collapse on the final day of the January transfer window and has been made available by Spurs who are keen to offload the former Arsenal striker to free up space and wages to bring in a forward more in keeping with Pochettino's style.

Adebayor joined Tottenham from Manchester City in August 2012 for £5m after a successful loan spell and during his four years at White Hart Lane he has scored 35 goals in 92 Premier League appearances for the club.

Should he join Villa, he would become Sherwood's eighth signing of the summer, following Jose Angel Crespo, Scott Sinclair, Micah Richards, Mark Bunn, Jordan Amavi, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Ayew.

ADEBAYOR HOLDS SHERWOOD TALKS

Emmanuel Adebayor held talks with Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood on Monday ahead of his proposed loan switch to the club, report the Daily Mail.

The Tottenham striker passed a medical at Villa Park but is yet to make the move, leading to speculation that the deal has hit a stumbling block.

But Villa are still confident of completing the deal before their Premier League opener at Bournemouth.
