West Brom have said that Joleon Lescott can leave as soon as they sign another defender, according to Sky sources.

Aston Villa had a £1m bid turned down for the central defender last month and it is understood that they, as well as Sunderland, are still keen to sign him.

The 32-year-old has one year left on the two-year deal he signed on joining the Baggies in 2014 following his release by Manchester City.

The former England defender made 29 appearances in his debut season at the Hawthorns but faces added competition for a centre-back spot this season following the arrival of James Chester from Hull City for £8m.

Lescott played the whole of West Brom's opening game against Manchester City but was on the bench for the 0-0 draw at Watford and the weekend defeat by Chelsea.

It could be one defender in and one out at West Brom as Tony Pulis has confirmed he is keen on signing Jonny Evans from Manchester United.

We understand the Baggies have already agreed a deal with Aston Villa for the sale of Joleon Lescott worth £2m, but will not let him leave until a replacement is secured.

"I would love to sign Jonny Evans," said Pulis today. "I think he would be a great signing, now it’s down to the money men and his side. Three parties have to agree: the two clubs and the player himself."

Aston Villa have agreed a fee with West Brom for central defender Joleon Lescott, according to Sky sources.

Lescott will undergo a medical with Aston Villa on Tuesday and, all going well, will then complete his transfer for a fee of £1m, which could rise to £2m.

The arrival of James Chester from Hull City and Jonny Evans from Manchester United have pushed Lescott down the pecking order at the Hawthorns.

Tim Sherwood is keen to add the experienced former Manchester City player, who has 26 England caps, to his squad before the window closes.

If the move goes through, Lescott will become Sherwood's 11th signing of an extremely busy summer at Villa Park.
