Sunderland appoint Sam Allardyce as new manager on two-year deal



Sunderland have appointed Sam Allardyce as manager on a two-year contract.
Dick Advocaat quit Sunderland on Sunday with the Black Cats second-bottom of the Premier League and winless in their opening eight games.
Allardyce, 60, has been out of management since he left West Ham at the end of last season.
"Of course it's a challenging job. But I hope to be able to help to bring the stability and success that everyone wants," Allardyce said.
"I'm looking forward to working with the players and of course I will be relying on the help of the Sunderland supporters."
Allardyce had a spell at Sunderland as a player between 1980 and 1981 and becomes the first person to manage both the Black Cats and rivals Newcastle.



His first home game at the Stadium of Light will be against Newcastle on 25 October, with an away trip to West Brom before that on 17 October.
Sunderland owner Ellis Short believes Allardyce, who managed Newcastle from May 2007 until January 2008, was the standout candidate for the job.
"Sunderland is a club he knows well and he was the obvious best choice for the job," Short said.
"He has vast experience of managing in the Premier League and an understanding first-hand of the north-east and the passion of our fans, which will stand him in great stead."

'Sam understood the importance of this job'

Short also claimed it was a "misconception" that the former Blackburn and Bolton boss "had to be persuaded to join us".
"This was a very popular job, proactively sought after by a large number of managers - contrary to much of what has been portrayed," Short said.
"The process was made easier by the fact that Sam was such an obvious choice.
"From the very beginning, Sam understood the importance of this job and showed great enthusiasm for the role and a desire to be part of moving this club forward."

Sunderland: David Moyes amongst managers under consideration

Sunderland are considering Real Sociedad manager David Moyes as they look for Dick Advocaat's successor but he is not near the top of their list.
The 19th-placed Black Cats want a wide range of options to replace the Dutchman, who quit on Sunday.
They are hoping to name a new boss before their next Premier League game at West Brom on 17 October.
Available pair Sam Allardyce and Nigel Pearson and Burnley manager Sean Dyche are leading the bookmakers' odds.
Sunderland have yet to win a league game this season.
Former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes, 52, has been in charge of Real Sociedad since November, but they are only above La Liga's relegation places on goal difference.

The other contenders

Allardyce, 60, had a season at Sunderland as a player in 1980-81. He has spent most of the past 14 years managing in the Premier League, with Bolton, Newcastle, Blackburn and West Ham, who did not renew his contract this summer.
Pearson, 52, was sacked by Leicester in the summer despite guiding the club to Premier League safety with seven wins from their last nine games.
The dismissal was linked to Pearson's son's role in a racist sex tape in the Leicester owners' homeland of Thailand.
Dyche guided Burnley into the Premier League two years ago but was unable to keep them there last season.
The Clarets are sixth in the Championship and after the 2-1 win at Rotherham on Friday, Dyche was unwilling to speak about the Sunderland situation.
"It's nothing to do with me," he said. "My focus is here."
Meanwhile, it has emerged West Ham manager Slaven Bilic tried to talk Advocaat out of quitting after his side's 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, the Dutchman's final game in charge.
"I told him I would like to stay," Bilic told the West Ham website. "He is a man full of energy and passion. The Premier League will be worse off without him."

Former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has not yet received any contact over the vacant job at Sunderland, according to Sky sources.

The 61-year-old, who left Upton Park at the end of last season after his four-year contract expired, has been installed as the Sky Bet favourite to succeed Dick Advocaat on Wearside.

Advocaat resigned as Black Cats boss on Sunday with the club bottom of the Premier League and without a victory from their first eight games and has since admitted his mind was made up before Saturday's draw with West Ham.

Sunderland are understood to have Allardyce high on a list of potential successors that also includes Sean Dyche,

Sky sources understand Dyche was on the verge of joining from Burnley in the summer before Advocaat overturned his decision to retire and signed a one-year contract.

Along with Allardyce and Dyche, Sky Bet have made former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson, Manchester City U21s boss Patrick Viera and former Swansea head coach Michael Laudrup strong candidates.

And Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked by Liverpool also on Sunday, is also now out of work.

David Moyes has turned down an approach from Sunderland to become their new head coach.
Sportsmail understands the Black Cats made contact with the Real Sociedad boss but he has decided against a return to the Premier League.
Moyes, though, did send trusted lieutenant Jimmy Lumsden to check on the Wearsiders after he was made aware of their interest.
However, the former Manchester United manager will be staying in La Liga, at least for the time being.
Moyes is not alone in saying no to Sunderland, who have been planning for life without Dick Advocaat for the past 10 days.
Sporting director Lee Congerton has been told to find the new boss by owner Ellis Short despite handing in his notice.
Sam Allardyce has informed Congerton that he is not interested, although that could change should Sunderland return with certain guarantees.

Burnley's Sean Dyche has also indicated he does not want to be considered.
It leaves Sunderland in a mess and they are hardly likely to be cheered by the comments of Advocaat, who quit on Sunday with the team winless and second from bottom.
'Our squad was simply not good enough,' he said.
'The club knew we had to strengthen ourselves, but the chairman never told me how much we could spend. I became negative and that didn't feel like myself.'
