Danny Blind sacked as Netherlands head coach Last Updated: 26/03/17 10:27pm
Danny Blind has been sacked as Netherlands head coach following their World Cup Qualifier defeat to Bulgaria. Fred Grim will take over as interim coach for the game against Italy in Amsterdam on Tuesday. The Dutch FA confirmed the decision had been made in a meeting on Sunday afternoon between Blind, professional football director Jean Paul Decossaux and technical director Hans van Breukelen. Spas Delev scored twice for Bulgaria to give them an unexpected 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Sofia on Saturday.
As a result, the Dutch are fourth in World Cup qualifying group A, with seven points from their five games to date. France top the group with 13 points with Sweden in second on 10 and the Netherlands facing the very real prospect of failing to qualify for a major international tournament for the second time running.
Decossaux said in a statement: "We have respect for what Danny meant for us and for the team during his tenure but the results unfortunately are disappointing."
Blind's son Daley, the Manchester United defender, paid tribute to his father in a post on Instagram.
"Worked at the highest level, a dream for both of us as father and son," he said. "It was not easy and it has not always been that, but I'm proud of how you've always taken responsibility and never gave up!"
